ANAESTHESIA

The anaesthesia team provides anesthetic services and pain management to patients undergoing surgery in the Operating Theatres, Catheter Laboratories, the adult, Paediatric Intensive Care and high dependency care units at BMCTH.
The numbers of patients undergoing anaesthesia each year is approximately 2,300.  Of these, approximately 80% are adults and approximately 500 adult patients undergo chest operations and associated investigations.
The Pain Management Service (PMS) provides a comprehensive range of services to both inpatient and outpatients of the hospital.  The multidisciplinary Pain Management team consists of Consultant Anaesthetists, Specialist Nurses, Physiotherapists and Pharmacists.  For the management of acute pain, the use of Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) and Epidural Analgesia are well established.  We offer treatments for patients with chronic painful conditions such as Refractory Angina and post-Thoracotomy Pain Syndrome.
The team is actively involved in a number of research and audit projects focused on the management of acute post-operative pain.
Although the anaesthetist’s major role is to provide anaesthesia during surgery, only about 50 per cent of time is spent in the operating theatre.  The rest of their time is divided among the following areas:
•    Preparation of surgical patients.
•    Post operative pain relief.
•    Obstetric units.
•    Advanced Cardiac Life Support Team (ACLS).
•    Intensive care units.
•    Emergency departments.
•    Chronic pain management.
•    Acute pain teams.
•    Dentistry.
•    Psychiatry—for patients receiving electro—convulsive therapy (ECT)
•    Radiology and radio therapy.
